Damien Hirst
No Fear
2008
Butterflies, cubic zirconia, glass, pins, scalpel blades, razor blades and household gloss on canvas
559 x 711 mm | 22 x 28 in
‘No Fear’ is one of a series of twelve paintings Hirst made in 2008. The canvases are painted in black household gloss and variously furnished with butterflies, glass, cubic zirconia, pins, scalpel blades, razor blades and religious trinkets.
The canvas size is the same as Andy Warhol’s reductionist images of death in the ‘Electric Chair’ paintings (1963–70), part of the ‘Death and Disaster’ series. In ‘The Execution Paintings’, Hirst sets the beauty of the butterflies against the violence implied by the black backgrounds of the canvas, the razors and scalpels.
